Great location (in the Botanic Gardens next to a rose garden, cricket oval and lake) with handy parking and toilets for roadside stopping. The best news is that it will be redeveloped by November 2016, so check back for what will hopefully be a must-stop experience.

We loved stopping here for a break on a drive to Melbourne. Great undercover picnic and BBQ facilities, plenty of visibility of the kids, clean bathrooms and surrounds and a really relaxing and open atmosphere. Playground caters for all ages. Benalla is a beautiful town and this playground/picnic area is well worth the short detour.

This lovely playground is positioned at the edge of the Benalla Botanical Gardens, right next to the picturesque rose garden.

The main attraction would be the rocket that kids can climb up, with a slide at the halfway mark. The main play unit is looking a little tired with a lot of paint peeling off the many metal surfaces. But that aside, there is plenty to keep kids occupied and interested. Particularly challenging is the chain bridge that is rather high off the ground with very high hand-holds. You wouldn't want to fall off this. Just behind the big unit is a little toddler slide and step structure, some spring riders, a see-saw and a spinning orb plus some swings. The play equipment is all attractively positioned around the existing trees, but unfortunately is not affored much sun protection by them.

There is a large roofed structure that coveres barbecues, tables and chairs and there are benches dotted about under the trees.

For a little adult enjoyment when playtime is finished, wander across the gardens to admire the larger-than-life bronze stature of Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop, then indulge in a lovely coffee or glass of wine at the Benalla Art Gallery Cafe, which overlooks Benalla Lake. Just lovely.
